Price index for raw materials is rebounding slowly
The prices paid by manufacturing and construction buying groups did, indeed, touch bottom in the second quarter after four consecutive quarters of recession-driven decline. On a quarterly basis, Purchasing’s transaction price index (100=Q1, 1994) calculated at 140.9, up from the cyclical bottom of 132.4 in the second quarter. And now, with the economy on a halting recover, prices of most commodity groups have begun to increase gradually. So, based on early forecasts, it appears the fourth quarter index will be 144.0.
